Tech: iPhone

So I finally got to play with an iPhone the other day. (I know I know a bit behind the curb, but what can I say, they haven't come out over here).
The interface is pure leet. Smooth, intuitive, responsive. Everything one looks for in a phone.
However would I actually replace this cellphone with my existing, slightly dated HTC Tytn? The answer is a simple no.
Why you ask - its the same reason the rest of the world hasn't replaced their phones with them (aside from them being pricey) its simply the lack of 3G internet.
Thats right - it has no 3G, which makes absolutely no sense, considering they have built almost the first phone which is actually easy to browse and actually use the internet with. Except with its crappy EDGE connection its basically just *slightly* faster than 56k dialup.
The excuse for this was 3G sucks battery life, but then so what? Make the phone slightly bigger, pop a bigger battery in and you're good to go.
Its like building a ferrari, with a small engine - because the petrol tank is too small.
Not to mention the whole "forcing" customers to use AT&T just plain old leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Although a quarter plus of iPhones sold the US haven't been registered with AT&T. (these were most likely shipped overseas and unlocked/hacked), as per wikipedia.
Yup. I'm sad to say it but the iPhone while being a great piece of hardware is almost akin to its cousin, the Macbook Air, simply more style than substance. My hat goes off to Apple, they truly are the masters of marketing. And heck maybe size and style is more important to the unwashed masses than functionality, who knows?

Side Note: A upcoming update for the iPhone is they are getting their SDK going, which means other developers can now create applications for it. (Basically what Facebooks done - a very smart move. Always embrace and empower your customers I say instead of treating them like prisoners.

| Article irrelevent. 3G iPhone is out, price is halved, and it will continue to be the technology leader. Lookit how Nokia and all the rest have cobbled their cute little me too copies. MacBook Air, another success. Not for the Dell types though. Those who don't "get" Apple like to say its all about the marketing, but the truth is its all about the superior product. |
